Our history

Tradition becomes future

The story begins in 1915 with Heinrich Schmidt’s decision to undergo training in the future-proof steel business. Starting “from the ground up,” he later worked as a commercial employee and authorized signatory for Felix Fiand KG in Hagen-Haspe and eventually managed the company as a managing director. He remained connected to the industry for many decades and retired in 1968.

Gerhard Schmidt, born in 1938, gained his first experience as an intern at the Klöckner Steelworks in Hagen-Haspe. After a few years at the Klöckner Group, he joined Eisen & Metall AG in Gelsenkirchen in 1961, where he worked for over 30 years as an authorized sales employee. He then offered his vast experience to the family business. Since autumn 2018, we have wholeheartedly allowed him to enjoy his well-deserved retirement at the age of 80.

Jochen Schmidt laid the foundation for a successful future in the steel business in 1985. After positions at Max Albrecht GmbH in Krefeld and Voss GmbH in Essen, he founded the Stahlhandel in Gevelsberg Jochen Schmidt GmbH in November 1993. With solid knowledge and immense dedication, he has successfully led the company for over 30 years. The company name was changed to Gevelsberger Stahlhandel GmbH in celebration of its 25th anniversary.

Anne-Christine Thol (née Schmidt), born in 1993, has been with Gevelsberger Stahlhandel since July 2013. After completing her specialized high school diploma at the Higher Commercial School Hagen, she successfully trained as a wholesale and foreign trade clerk at a steel company. With a degree in business management and a teaching certificate obtained in 2019, she significantly contributes to the modern corporate structure and supports the training of young talents.
